This a full set of Aquila AQ-91U strings, for bass ukuleles like the Kala UBass and Ohana BKB-35E, as well the Short Bass One, which is made by Aquila also. The packet is red, and the name on that packet says Thunder Reds. You may have guessed then, that the strings are also red! These strings give a strong, consistent sound, and represent an improvement in terms of the richness of tone of other Aquila bass ukulele strings, and those made by other manufacturers.

To reach the lower frequencies of sound required for the uBass, manufacturers had to increase the string guage. And that is still the case with these red bass strings, they are chunky! But overly increasing the string guage also dulls the sound. In this instance however, that increase in string guage has been reduced by increasing the density of the Aquila AQ-91U strings with copper powder - allowing the strings to be thinner, but still produce a more powerful and full sound than other bass uke strings.

The result is these Thunder Red strings are more responsive and rich than other bass ukulele strings. Intonation is improved due to the fact these thinner guage strings don't need to be fretted as hard. The stickiness that you can detect with some bass uke strings is reduced also, allowing the fingers to slip off the strings more smoothly. There is some residual stickiness (however reduced), and Aquila recommend a bit of baby powder if this is an issue for you.

The Aquila AQ-91 Thunder reds are designed for instruments with a maximum of 20 inches scale length. There is an instructional leaflet inside the pack which conflicts the information on the outside of the packet to say 21 inches is the scale length maximum, but best to be on the safe side! The leaflet gives comprehensive fitting instructions as well as advice on how to play using the Thunder reds and your hand position - all of which is very useful.
