Omega standard workshop set up for new student violins1. Check for sound construction, appropriate choice of woods for that model and an overall pleasing finish. Every violin is a unique hand-made instrument. Minor variations are expected. (Sometimes an exceptionally good instrument appears. We would upgrade that, and place it in an "elite" collection. Sometimes a poor instrument appears. That would be returned to the supplier.)
2. Check the pegs for correct fitting and smooth operation. Student instruments nearly always require reaming and treating with peg compound. 3. The bridge is set up and positioned correctly. Attention is paid to the close fitting of the feet on the surface of the instrument, when the bridge is upright. No gaps!
4. With the bridge in position we next check the string height above the end of the finger-board. The top profile of the bridge may need trimming to obtain a good result.
5. The strings passing over the nut need two checks. Is the nut spacing correct? Is the string height above the finger board correct? 6. Check the chin rest is exactly in the right place and secure.
7. Finely tune then and play the instrument. The sound post may need repositioning. 8. Check the bow for straightness and proper movement when tensioned.
9. If all is well pack the bridge ready for transport. Published 9th June 2011 |
