Choosing a Violin Shoulder RestThe violin shoulder rest is a relatively recent invention, designed to assist violinists by providing support - which in turns aids fluidity of violin playing technique. While not universally used, they are usually recommended by violin teachers, who advise using a violin shoulder rest to help players hold the instrument properly. Violin shoulder rests free the hand from having to support the instrument, allowing violinists to play without raising the shoulder. Violin shoulder rests are also important for players to achieve vibrato, together with being useful in correctly positioning the violin while playing. They also help to prevent strain on the muscles, as violin shoulder rests allow the violin to be held stable without the shoulder being pushed upwards or needing to push your head forward.
We stock a variety of violin shoulder rests, and would normally recommend one of three models. The Viva violin shoulder rest is manufactured in Europe and has non-slip feet and a convenient foldaway design for when the violin shoulder rest is not in use. Another, option from the Viva range is the Viva Diamond violin shoulder rest, which is manufactured from the very highest quality components and finished with attractive flamed maple. The Wolf violin shoulder rest is another good choice - particularly for violinists who need a taller rest for their body shape. This durable, yet comfortable violin shoulder rest is made by Stentor Violins. Published 9th June 2011 |
